Excessive Heat Warning

I used to live in Florida where the heat and humidity often combined to make life miserable for most people. But not for me. I loved the feeling of swimming through the air as I walked around. That plus the salty breeze from the ocean was pretty much ideal for me. So when I see excessive heat warnings posted in the news, I think a lot about the different ways heat is handled throughout the United States.

Some people live in cities where air conditioning is unnecessary for a majority of the year, so they have just tolerated the two or three days of excessive heat. But when it’s considered a heat wave or warning, residents have to prepare themselves for looking a lot like a splooting squirrel. (Do yourself a favor and learn more about what splooting is.

The most interesting thing I’ve seen in the areas that are anticipating an excessive heat warning for Labor Day 2022, is the number of air conditioning units for sale on second-hand marketplaces has suddenly increased! People are ready to take advantage of the people who’ve waited to buy one at the retail shops and might splurge for one from a neighbor for a markup.

But it’s a DRY heat!

Excessive heat is also different when it’s a DRY heat. I think some of you may argue with me about that, but I think dry heat feels so much worse. It’s like being baked alive. At least with humid heat you just feel like you’re in the shower – not something that feels like turning into a rotisserie chicken.

So are you preparing for an excessive heat warning this week? How are you preparing? Do you just plan to take the squirrel plan? Splurge or Sploot?!

This is a squirrel in my own backyard in the 90s. At the time, I didn’t realize he was avoiding excessive heat by “splooting.” I just figured it was comfy.
